Happy July!
I meant to do some album reviews for Black music month, but the way my statistics class has stayed on my NECK this past month, I opted out! I have 4 more classes left and I’m a FREE woman for the rest of the summer. (Yessir!)
Let’s get into the topic of discussion! what ya girl listened to and purchased the month of June and from where. Goin to focus on CD’s of course, but I also did a sweet record haul and I’m afraid I need to be banned from spending money for a while.
I usually do my music shopping when I get out of class, since I’m already in the city. My favorite places to cop CD’s are Academy Records both the 12th & 18th street locations. 18th for the $1-$2 finds on pop, house, and garage. 12th st for everything else. I usually get pleasantly surprised whenever I pop in.
I also found a new fave spot to dig for CDs in the Village called Generation Records. It’s definitely not a new shop, its been around since the 90’s but I literally never been in until last month.
Its two floors and majority of the CDs are in the basement and in crates, so come with time and patience to sift through it all. Me and the clerk (I forgot his name :/) hit it off when I showed him my cd player and we continued to bond over collecting cds and what the correct pricing should be for them because around the corner at Village Revival they sure like to hike the prices resulting in you gettin ripped off. I’m all for getting your money, but theres no reason I should be paying $15 for a Tyrese CD from 1998. (I’m looking at YOU Jamal!!!) so we don’t bother going there, not only is it overpriced its a mess in there too. Sorry not sorry. I love to befriend everyone who works at record stores, especially if I frequent them. They’ll put things aside for you, help you pick out records, because they know the store top to bottom, and my favorite thing… DISCOUNT!!
What I purchased from Academy:
4non Blondes “What’s Up” is my fave song to sing during Karaoke. Mel C’s solo album was surprisingly good, I remembered a song or two while listening. This Etienne Charry album is french radio themed and I mostly bought it because of the artwork and because it was $2.
Trying to collect all Prince’s albums like Pokémon cards.
Generation Records:
This Lisa Lisa Album is soooo good! Never knew she had a solo career. Definitely was on repeat from the moment I purchased, straight into my CD player. I have an Angela Bofill record but I’m happy to have this hits collection, especially with her recent passing. RIP.
And that’s All the CD’s I purchased for last month. I also have the shops I specifically go to for Vinyl and of course Ebay is my favorite place to shop for things I already know I want to add to my collection. Discogs as well, but I think this post is long enough for now!
My special instruction for you is to pop into one of my fave record shops and tell em’ Ella sent ya! support local businesses and I’ll holla at ya.
